Welcome to May and a cooler start to our Business at Sunrise meeting with our Guest Speaker this month Rebecca Andrews - Deputy Director General Queensland Government Office of Small Business. Rebecca has a wealth of knowledge in both public and private organisations as well as owning her own small business.
Rebecca bought up some interesting facts below for our local area:
In 2016-17 total Small Business in the Bulimba, Chatsworth and Greenslopes State Electorate Region was 15,035
•97.4% of businesses in the region are small businesses
•61.6% sole traders
•26.9% employed 1 to 4 employees
•8.9% employed 5-19 employees
The top three industries in 2016-17:
•Professional, scientific and technical services - 16.8%
•Construction – 16%
•Rental, hiring and real estate services – 11.8%
The latest small business grants available - digital grants, entrepreneur grants and business growth fund as well mentoring for growth if you want assistance. There are also programs for Advancing Women in Business and Advancing Indigenous Business. We have links to all the government assistance sites for your access on our website.
Question time was the most interesting with some great questions from the floor .
We also heard from our Business of the Month - Stepping Stone Clubhouse who provides a support system for people living with mental illness, rather than a medical or a treatment program. They offer a broad spectrum of services as they believe that a holistic approach is required to fully assist people with a mental illness.
Have a Great month in Business and we hope to see you at our next meeting in June with Daniel Gillespie from the Taxation Office as our main speaker with Greg Schossow from Department of Housing to discuss the Digital Scorecard.
We would like your feedback on types of speakers for future events.
